“A Camp” is a collaborative effort between two Swedish musicians: pop star and former map skater Nina Persson, of The Cardigans fame, and Niclas Frisk, (guitarist and composer), an outdoorsman and explorer who had himself loved pop celebrity with his Swedish pop eccentrics Atomic Swing.
Their initially LP, the eponymous “A Camp” in 2001, was awarded four Swedish Grammies and met with much essential praise abroad and Stateside.
Its follow-up, “Colonia”, was recorded last year in New York – everywhere she lives and performs with Brechtian biased cabaret outfit The Citizens Band – with help from Persson’s partner (soundtrack composer, formerly of influential US alternative mavericks Shudder To Reflect) Nathan Larson, drummer Kevin March, Joan Wasser (aka Joan As Control Woman), Swedish singer-songwriter Nikolai Dunger and former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha.
Over the years, the music and lyrics Persson has bent have developed increasingly ambitious and academically bold, at a snail’s pace instructive a talent of odd inventiveness and genuine substance. “I am soothe the Lovefool girl”, she insists.
“Colonia” is an pledge gem of smart, melodious, provocative pop Americana, and Nina eases owing to this collection of a dozen inexplicably damp songs.
If whatever thing, it’s a surpass effort than their charming initiation, packed full of lovely melodies, a out of this world stylishness, gifted lyrics and wondrous terms.
The bold, elegant opening footstep, “The Crowning”, is a lavish, sarcastic farewell to an unnamed former world leader. It is practically a departure from the band’s intimate, broadcast inflected initiation.
The guitar loops that herald the arrival of “Stronger Than Jesus”, meanwhile, are melodic, folksy and classic American… with Persson hinting at the stylishness of Sheryl Crowe stridently
“We wanted it to be more of everything,” says Persson. “A modest more restless, less introvert and more irritated. Cantankerousness can be practically charming. It’s more funthan being a name really smart and gifted and politically right”, she says.
“Colonia” is a seductive album about huge themes, “an exploration of colonialism, as the title implies”, according to Nina’s partner, Larson, and the world’s cultural surrender to America.
“The music is romantic but lyric-wise we wanted to take away the romantic fog and just look at creature instincts”, says Frisk.
If whatever thing, it’s a surpass effort than their charming initiation, packed full of lovely melodies, a out of this world stylishness, gifted lyrics and wondrous terms.
And Nina eases brilliantly owing to this collection of a dozen inexplicably damp songs.
My highlights: “Stronger Than Jesus”, “Like Has Left The Room”, ” My America”, “The Weed Got Here Initially”, “Stronger Than Jesus” and, back to the vacillation ’60s mode, the pleased “Here Are Many Wild Animals”.
    Favorably not compulsory.

A Camp has really hit it–lilting and gorgeous melodies, dark and sophisticated lyrics. This is not to be missed! I find the songs running over and over in my mind and each time I take note it takes on new meanings and depth.

Different from their initially album but equally as excellent. Nina Persson’s accent has really matured. Not only are the melodies fantastic, the lyrics are consequential. I got a chance to see them live at the Crocodile in Seattle, a tiny intimate venue. They are so excellent live – even my partner, whom I dragged there, was impressed.
